album cover A SXSW favorite for the past two years, Band of Heathens release their own brand of Lonestar State countrified rock and soul. Formed as a result of a regular shared billing at Austin’s Momo’s, the three original songwriters (Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist) banded together in 2006 to form this soon to be legendary act. Drummer John Chipman joined in early 2007 to solidify the grouping. For the Twangville proud, the self-titled recording has been eagerly anticipated. File under: Rock / Americana / Soul

Noteworthy

  • ABIGAIL WASHBURN & THE SPARROW QUARTET, The Sparrow Quartet (Nettwerk)

Joined by Bela Fleck and Casey Driessen on follow up album to 2005’s critically acclaimed ‘Song of the Traveling Daughter”.
  • DANIELIA COTTON, Rare Child (Adrenaline)
    Official Site | MySpace | Stream | MP3**
    [audio:http://audio.sxsw.com/2008/mp3/Danielia_Cotton-Make_U_Move.mp3]
A Twangville favorite new soulstress with a powerful punch in the key of Tina Turner or Joe Cocker.
  • EXPLORERS CLUB, Freedom Wind
    Virb | MySpace | Stream | MP3***
    [audio:http://audio.sxsw.com/2008/mp3/The_Explorers_Club-Do_You_Love_Me.mp3]
Hands down the best Beach Boys and Byrds era throwback band out there. Escapism at its best.
  • I SEE HAWKS IN LA, Hallowed Ground (Big Book)
Official Site | MySpace | Stream
Twanged up three-part harmonies complimented by steel pedal and psychodelic guitar. Another one of southern California’s under the radar gems.
  • MASON JENNINGS, In The Ever (Brushfire)
Official Site | MySpace | Stream
Another great addition to the Brushfire Records artist list, this is Jenning’s 6th full length album. He’s been touring with Brett Dennen and Missy Higgins rounding out a spectacular bill.
