Reckless Kelly + More, Releases 6/24

Reckless Kelly performing Alejandro Escovedo’s “Castanets”.

RECKLESS KELLY, Bulletproof (Yep Roc)
Official Site | MySpace | Samples (Amazon)

album cover Believe me, passing over Alejandro Escovedo to feature Reckless Kelly this week was not easy. But that’s just how much I dig this Texas band. They took some time to get ‘Bulletproof’ out but early signs show that it was worth the wait. “American Blood” (MP3)* takes a critical stance on war profiteering with lines like “home with his feet on his desk, while the boys got theirs in the sand.” File under: Alt-Country / Country / Rock

Noteworthy

  • ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO, Real Animals (Manhattan)
Official Site | MySpace | Samples (Amazon)
Plenty of buzz surrounding this album. John Anderson’s story on Escovedo’s Sunday night performance at this year’s SXSW show says it all.
  • AMOS LEE, Last Days At The Lodge (Blue Note)
Official Site | MySpace | Samples (Amazon)
Collaboration by Doyle Bramhally, Jr., Spooner Oldham, Pino Palladino and James Gadson make this an all-star lineup for the third album from soulfull Amos Lee.
  • CROOKED STILL, Still Crooked (Signature Sounds)
Official Site | MySpace | Samples (Amazon)
If you liked Alison Krauss’s collaboration last year with Robert Plant, you’ll need to pay attention to this record and this band. The string bands cometh and Crooked Still is one of the bands leading the charge with the lovely Aoife O’Donovan on vocals.
  • HACIENDA BROTHERS, Arizona Motel (Proper)
    Official Site | MySpace
The first release since the passing of Chris Gaffney. ‘Arizona Motel’ kicks off a summer tour in support of the Gaffney family. Lend your support at helpgaff.com.

  1. SFoley Says:

Wow. I’m also a RK fan, but have found Bulletproof borderline Mainstream Country. Real Animal, on the other hand, is my vote for album of the year (thus far).
