Who’s Playing Wednesday: A Twangville Give-Away

Wednesday is apparently the national night for musical residencies. In KC you’ve got Walkenhorst while in Austin you can regularly catch Jon Dee Graham AND James McMurtry. I’m lucky to live in Boston where most Wednesday’s I can catch Dennis Brennan, usually with special guest former J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf joining in for a few electrifying songs late in the set.

So what’s the preferred Wednesday night gig in your town? Post your comment and you could win a signed copy of Bob Walkenhorst’s solo release The Beginner. A winner will be selected at random when the contest ends on Tuesday, 6/24/08 at midnight EST.**

As a special bonus, here are a few more live tracks from Twangville’s visit with Walkenhorst and friends.

Jon Dee Graham and James McMurtry are hands-down my favorite Wed. night anywhere. We call it the “Wednesday night church service.” Last night’s show was smokin’ — Jon Dee is on a roll, debuting the songs that will be on his next album, and James was just back from his long tour promoting “Just Us Kids.” Residency shows rock principally because the artists are comfortable, the crowd is into the music and its where new stuff gets tryouts. Second-best in Austin is Monday nights at the Saxon Pub, with Matt the Electrician leading Bob Schneider and Lonelyland. You can buy a CD of the show at the end of the night.

I’m a fellow Bostoner, so I’m with you on the excellence of Dennis Brennan on Wednesdays. And how ’bout Tuesday bluegrass night at the Cantab?

  3. Stian Says:

My experience is a bit short on things to compare with, as the last time I went to a regular gig was Monday nights at Sardine’s in Oslo in the late 80s, but there can still be no doubt: Bob Walkenhorst with Jeff Porter and Norm Dahlor at The record Bar in Westport, KC, MO is brilliant stuff, with great musicians, insightful, beautiful and sometimes rockin’ songs, and the nicest group of fans you could ever hope to meet. In fact, Wednesday nights at The record Bar are such a great experience that I travelled twice from Norway to KC to experience it.
