Monday Morning Video: Alejandro Escovedo with Los Lobos

Monday, June 25, 2012 By Mayer Danzig

Wow, this is a find. Here are two clips showing Alejandro Escovedo performing with Los Lobos earlier this year. The first shows the musicians rehearsing Escovedo’s “Rosalie” in a Los Angeles studio; the second shows them performing it the next night at LA’s Greek Theater.

Albert Castiglia – Living the Dream

Friday, June 22, 2012 By Bill Wilcox

Albert Castiglia plays a hot guitar in a traditional blues format, taking cues from generations of Chicago electric bluesmen. Echoes of Freddie and Albert King, Otis Rush and Magic Sam can be heard in Castiglia’s playing, although Castiglia takes a decidedly more aggressive tack than those greats. Castiglia’s connection to those great Chicago artists that […]

Peter Karp & Sue Foley – Beyond the Crossroads

Tuesday, June 19, 2012 By Bill Wilcox

Peter Karp and Sue Foley have developed a unique sound that seems to be a cross between country and blues – bluntry – but with a healthy dose of R&B thrown in.  Both veteran blues-roots musicians, Karp and Foley joined forces for a second combined effort, Beyond the Crossroads, reprising the teamwork that made 2010’s […]

Monday Morning Video: The Waterboys

Monday, June 18, 2012 By Mayer Danzig

Here’s my question for the day: how come I never had an assembly like this when I was in grade school? Here’s Mike Scott of the Waterboys performing “The Whole of the Moon” for a group of schoolchildren in Ireland. And the best part? The kids know the words and sing along!

Justin Townes Earle at the Somerville Theatre

Friday, June 15, 2012 By Jeff McMahon

At a college neighborhood near Boston, Justin Townes Earle seemed a bit different again. He has gone through so many phases in his life and music it’s tough to figure him out. I’ll always yearn for the simplicity of Yuma and his first live performance opening for Ron Sexsmith back in the day. At the […]

Royal Southern Brotherhood

Thursday, June 14, 2012 By Bill Wilcox

Ever since Little Village’s one disappointing album in 1992, I am prepared to be underwhelmed by any new group promotors tout as a “supergroup.”  There have been, of course, huge successes when music superstars were mixed and matched into new units (e.g., Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – comprised of members from Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds and […]

The Bottle Rockets at the Center for the Arts

Wednesday, June 13, 2012 By Jeff McMahon

After forming his first band in 1977, alt-country pioneer Brian Henneman could easily say “I’ll Be Coming Around” at some point and he would. After a stint in Uncle Tupelo, and then a lending a hand on Wilco’s debut album, Brian can certainly say he’s had his hand in some pretty influential stuff. But then, […]

Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls – Packed for Exile

Tuesday, June 12, 2012 By Chip Frazier

LA based Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls release their new album Packed for Exile on July third. It is an impressive release with a blend of Americana roots and 70’s Album Rock. Interestingly, the band’s keyboardist is Jason Federici, who is the son of the late E Street Band member Danny Federici. The band may be from […]

Langhorne Slim- The Way We Move

Friday, June 08, 2012 By Eli Petersen

In March of this year, I caught a Langhorne Slim headlining show at one of my favorite dive bars back home. I had seen Langhorne before (opening for a pretty epic DBT-Lucero double bill in Boston), so I figured it would be a good show. It wasn’t. It was extraordinary. Note: I’m still unsure if […]
