Win Big: Signed Bloodshot Records Poster

by in Alt-Country, Americana, Contests, News, SXSW

Bloodshot RecordsThe Bloodshot Records day party is a traditional highlight of every SXSW. Held behind the Yard Dog Folk Art Gallery in Austin Texas, it is a relaxed afternoon of filled with beer, food, merriment and, of course, great music.

To celebrate their 15th anniversary, the folks at Bloodshot decided to take that experience on the road throughout the United States. Although it will be tough to recreate the full SXSW experience outside Austin, I know that they’ll do their best. (I like living in Boston, but Boston ain’t no Austin…)

You can get in on the fun and win this limited edition poster. Even better, it is signed by many of the artists who performed at the Boston party: Graham Parker, Bobby Bare Jr., Ha Ha Tonka, The Deadstring Brothers, Charlie Pickett and Justin Townes Earle!

To win, post a comment below with your favorite Bloodshot Records release. (For a reminder on the depth of their catalogue, click here.) A winner will be selected at random when the contest ends on Friday, 4 September 09 at midnight ET.**

Since 1994, Bloodshot Records has championed the music that lurks between genres. We’ve always been drawn to the good stuff nestled in the dark, nebulous cracks where punk, country, soul, pop, bluegrass, blues and rock mix and mingle and mutate. We like artists who work over American roots forms with chains and velvet gloves with little regard for formality or protocol, who aren’t afraid to molest and caress these forms and take music into uncharted and exciting waters. They don’t listen to the taste-makers or trend-watchers—hell, most of the time they don’t even listen to us.

Special thanks to our friends at Bloodshot Records for the poster and for 15 years of mighty fine music.

**By participating in Twangville contests you agree to allow Twangville to post the winner’s name and city on our web site. We pass along the winning addresses to the artist or promotions company for fulfillment. Twangville will not use your address for any other reason.

It’s kinda hard to say anything but Ryan Adam’s Heartbreaker here…

  • http://garsaeger@yahoo.com Gar Saeger

I will choose Neko Case’s Blacklisted though this is tough since there were so many releases that I have bought and enjoyed over the years.

Wait, you`ve got to be kidding….I`m supposed to pick a favorite from the great unwashed, yet ridiculously talented artists on the esteemed Bloodshot label ? Hardly fair. Now you`re simply stirring up jealousy and unhealthy competitive juices among the beloved performers who are now seeking our attention and praise in this contest, besides just our CD money.
Yet, I`ll weigh in with a vote for Wayne”The Train Hancock and the heavy swinging “Tulsa”…music so hot it should come packaged with an air conditioner.

Oh man. I’m still so sad that I was out of town this weekend and missed this show – it must have been a party. I’m gonna vote for Heartbreaker as well, but it’s killing me not to vote for some Justin Townes Earle or Scott H. Biram or Old 97′s or – well goodness, they’ve put out a lot of great records!

My “Wreck Your Life” cd has the most visible wear and tear, so that’s my vote. So hard to pick a “favorite” though.

Scott Birams Graveyard Shift! Viva Biram!

  • http://www.myspace.com/amateuranthro DavidPaco

The Gore Gore Girls’ “Get The Gore”!

  • http://halfwaytojackson.blogspot.com AtomicPope

With all the talent on Bloodshot, it’s a hard choice, but I would have to go with Justin Townes Earle! If you get chance, check out the fanblog I made at halfwaytojackson.blogpot.com.

This is like asking a parent to say which child they love best…impossible! Maybe it’s Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers’ “Cockadoodledon’t,” or “Lean Forward” by the Bottle Rockets or “Baby” by the Detroit Cobras or “Get the Gore” by the Gore Gore Girls. Oh and I love Paul Burch, especially “John Peel” off of “East to West” and I haven’t even started. The one I have listened to the most is Scott H. Biram’s “Graveyard Shift” so I suppose it must get my vote.

It’s impossible to pick a favorite!! But… I’ll have to go with either Furnace Room Lullaby by Neko Case or Ax in the Oak by Ben Weaver

  • Jenni

Ha Ha Tonka..Novel Sounds…oh so good!

  • michael meehan

gotta go with the Sadies, Pure Diamond Gold…

  • Jennifer LaSuprema

It’s impossible to pick one record, but I gotta say The Meat Purveyors’ new EP, “Come and Take It” is pretty fantastic! And The Blacks “Dolly Horrorshow” is one of my favorite records ever. And Kelly Hogan should make another enchanting record for us, too. Please?

Picking a favorite Bloodshot album is the equivalent saying ‘pick a favorite ice cream’. But, if I must, then I choose “Down to the Promised Land: 5 Years of Bloodshot Records”. Down to the Promised Land was my introduction to Bloodshot when I moved to Chicago 10 years ago and I was completely blown away. I never thought I would find a compilation that could seamlessly meld some of my favorite genres of music–old school country, punk, bluegrass, along with great lyrics and a heavy dose of instruments you don’t hear every day. In the years since, I’ve been to more Bloodshot shows than I can count, have convinced my dad that these artists are the some of the best he’s ever going to find, and turned the owner of a record store in Iowa on to the greatness that is everything Bloodshot. And I hold steadfast that the 10th Anniversary Hideout Party was the best Hideout Block Party that’s happened thus far!

Ah! What a difficult task! I’d have to say Neko Case, Blacklisted.

  • Jeff Weyer

Hard task…I’d have to say Justin’s Midnight at the Movies.

  • Jason Moore

It’s hard to say what my favorite Bloodshot Record is…but if pressed I’d have to go with Wayne Hancock’s ‘Tulsa’.

  • Anne

I am addicted to The Deadstring Brothers! Probably Starving Winter Report is my fav.

  • Andy Pulliam

So many great ones! Gotta love some Justin Townes Earle–both are good, but especially good is “The Good Life”! Bloodshot’s the best!

  • Klutch

THE BOTTLE LET ME DOWN… fer all us hard drinkin moms & dads out there needing to entertain the kids while we mix up some dog hair and down some ibuprofen.

  • Michele

Bobby Bare Jr.’s Young Criminals’ Starvation League–I wouldn’t have survived the summer of 2004 without it.

  • John Fervoy

Waco Brothers – To the Last Dead Cowboy. OK, I’m digging deep into the catalogue here but has music of any genre been more raucous and fun since then? This record starts out strong with the rocking and whistling Geronimo and keeps on kicking. it established the direction that the Wacos have stuck to ever since and whether it has there best songs or not is immaterial as the Wacos are best experienced live even though I miss their slide guitar player. They’re still kicking as is Bloodshot and I’m grateful.

  • Molly T

What a hard decision to make… I’ll go with Neko Case’s Blacklisted though. Great record x 2039480842, I still listen to it constantly, and it holds some sentimental value to me. Plus Neko Case is my hero.

I grew up on Bloodshot artists / records… lots of my childhood memories are infused with music from the label (I’m 19… so still older than the label but young enough to have grown up with it thanks to my parents!). Anyway, thank you, Bloodshot. I am trying to be a musician myself now, and I owe a lot of my influences / musical shapings / life’s lessons to the fine folks involved with Bloodshot.

Another vote for The Bottle Let Me Down, an excellent intro to the music for the car seat set.

  • Sean Russell

Although Justin Townes Earle’s catalog maybe small (for now), it packs quite a punch

The Yuma EP serves as an introduction to Justin’s sound and songwriting. Every song on here is a work of art. Ghost of Virgina, Yuma, I Don’t Care, all great songs!

Justin’s first full length, The Good Life, if everything you could want in a twang record! Songs of heartbreak, women, hard living, and the civil war. It’s quite possibly the perfect album.

Justin’s latest album, Midnight at the Movies, shows a more mature songwriter. Songs like Mama’s Eyes, Someday I’ll be Forgiven for This, and Midnight at the Movies really show his talents.

Justin’s catalog is quite impressive! 2 Full LPs and an EP in the span of 2 years (on top of his non-stop touring schedule)! I have heard rumors, a third LP will be released this spring. I can only hope it’s true!

Oh yeah, and thanks to RS Field for producing this great body of work!
