Tell us about your tour vehicle.
It’s a Toyota Hilux. 360,000 miles. No major repairs no and it hasn’t broken down. Pretty boring in that sense. It was designed to do grittier work than cart a keyboard around so a lad could sing about feelings.
How do you eat cheaply and/or healthy while on tour?
All of the above, it’s fairly sporadic. If I have time I’ll look up a good place that has been reviewed. I’ve eaten more burgers than I care to remember.
How many strings do you break in a typical year? How much does it cost to replace them?
I tend to just wear them to rust, the music isn’t passionate enough to break strings unfortunately. My string budget is negligible.
Where do you rehearse?
The rehearsal space is usually whatever stage the gig is on that night. We rarely rehearse as we’ve playing together for a long time. I apologise for these riveting answers.
What was the title and a sample lyric from the first song that you wrote?
Mad Man’s Road. “They say that her hair still grows, and falls on Mad Man’s road”. Sweet.
Describe your first gig.
I brutalised Nirvana songs in a bar in Cork. I think the audience took pity on me more than anything.
What was your last day job? What was your favorite day job?
I worked as a Stonemason. The only other day job I had was working for Apple computer factory. I preferred the masonry.
How has your music-related income changed over the past 5-10 years? What do you expect it to look like 5-10 years from now?
It’s been fairly steady thankfully and I haven’t had to take a second job. I haven’t managed to buy any property and paying rent is hurting more as the years pass by. As for the future, I don’t know and there are definitely no guarantees in this business. I could be stacking stones next year.
What one thing do you know now that you had wished you knew when you started your career in music?
If someone says the words “I’ll never screw you over”, that person is going to screw you over.
