Tell us about your tour vehicle. Any notable breakdown stories?

She’s a fine ole 2019 dodge grand Caravan, with a well earned 245k miles on her.

I’ve made all the usual repairs I suppose but I give her only The Best Gas and I always sleep very deeply within her.

How do you eat cheaply and/or healthy while on tour?

Oh well….I believe in the Loves! 4 hard boiled eggs for under three bucks is about as good as it gets today in these United States.

How many strings do you break in a typical year? How much does it cost to replace them?

I never break a string, or very very rarely. If I do though, show’s over!

Where do you rehearse?

I rehearse in my mind. I leave it up to your imagination to imagine my imaginings.

What was the title and a sample lyric from the first song that you wrote?

The first real song I wrote is called “Weird”

“You tell me you’re different, you tell me you’re strange, you tell me that there’s something wrong with your brain.
So your mother found God and your dad likes to drink, but you’re not as weird as you’d like me to think”

Describe your first gig.

16 years old. No name classic rock cover band at the China Club in Hillsdale NJ.

What was your last day job? What was your favorite day job?

I was a licensed New York City tour guide. Worked on them double-decker buses.

It was also my favorite day job for sure! I got heckled by Billy Joel’s drunken mother one time.

How has your music-related income changed over the past 5-10 years? What do you expect it to look like 5-10 years from now?

Should I just fax you over my 2023 tax return? Yeah no. Somehow I’ve managed to make a living at this but it hasn’t always been pretty.

Like the song says…freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.

What one thing do you know now that you had wished you knew when you started your career in music?

Eat more fiber.

Eef Barzelay, born Ifar Barzelay on May 12, 1970, in Tel Aviv, Israel, is an Israeli-American musician known as the principal songwriter and singer of the alternative country band Clem Snide. He was raised in Teaneck, New Jersey, and attended Teaneck High School. In 1991, Barzelay co-founded Clem Snide in Boston, naming the band after a character from William S. Burroughs’s novels. The band released its debut album, “You Were a Diamond,” in 1998, followed by several others, including “The Ghost of Fashion” in 2001, which featured the song “Moment in the Sun” used as the theme for the NBC series “Ed.” After a hiatus starting in 2007, Clem Snide reformed in 2009 and continued to release music, with their tenth album, “Oh Smokey,” released in 2024.
