Danny Benair of the Three O’Clock On Lessons Learned About Picture Sleeves and Non LP B-sides

Tuesday, January 06, 2015 By Mayer Danzig

Tell us about your tour vehicle.

We play so rarely we use a band member’s van.

How do you eat cheaply and/or healthy while on tour?

I’m a vegetarian, I can always find something!

How many drum sticks do you break in a typical year? How much does it cost to replace them?

Way too many; one rehearsal 4 sticks…

Where do you rehearse?

Space rented by our keyboard player Adam Merrin’s other band The 88. The equipment is set up so it is very practical.

What was the title and a sample lyric from the first song that you wrote?

Describe your first gig.

Playing for Trout and Beer in Santa Monica covering Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac songs. Everyone else in the band was so much better that me, they had real equipment I had a Crown drum set.

What was your last day job? What was your favorite day job?

Co-own Burger Music Publishing, the Burger Records publishing arm, and Natural Energy Lab, which is a music placement company I have had for 14 years.

How has your music-related income changed over the past 5-10 years? What do you expect it to look like 5-10 years from now?

Had executive jobs that paid very nicely to owning my own thing sometimes great sometimes not so good… 5-10 years I hope I am breathing…

What one thing do you know now that you had wished you knew when you started your career in music?

Well when I started in bands we got a record deal very early I visualised touring and making records, not money..but I was young thinking about picture sleeves and non LP b-sides was more important. There was no school to teach you. I went to Kim Fowley High School.

Danny Benair is the drummer for legendary LA rock band The Three O’Clock  The group were a cornerstone of the Paisley Underground, a group of ’80s Southern California bands who mixed pure-pop sensibilities with psychedelic overtones. The group released a string of critically acclaimed albums in the 1980’s for both legendary LA indie Frontier Records and I.R.S. Records. Prince, a fan of the band’s music, released their final record Vermillion on his label in 1988.

The band reunited in 2013 to play Coachella and celebrate The Hidden Word Revealed, a collection of their recordings from 1981-1986.
