Tell us about your tour vehicle. Any notable breakdown stories?

I have a Chevrolet Venture passenger van. I once broke down in rural Quebec and had to get a tow to a garage where no one spoke English. It was very funny and ended up all working out well.

How do you eat cheaply and/or healthy while on tour?

I try to get protein and carbs – chicken, steak, fish, rice vegetables, wraps, sandwiches. Pizza and burgers when I must. Eating healthy is not easy, and eating cheaply is not easy but I do my best.

Where do you rehearse?

Depends where I am playing – in Seattle I rehearse at my drummer’s place, or a rehearsal space, in Vancouver a local rehearsal space, and in UK I rehearse at my drummer’s studio space.

What was the title and a sample lyric from the first song that you wrote?

Describe your first gig.

Terrifying. In an old town hall in the middle of the country. I sang the song “Paper Roses”. I felt like I wanted to implode and disappear forever, but it also felt so exhilarating.

What was your last day job? What was your favorite day job?

My last day job was at a car part factory, and I hated it. My favourite day job was working on a horse farm mucking stalls and working horses.

How has your music-related income changed over the past 5-10 years? What do you expect it to look like 5-10 years from now?

It has been steadily growing, I expect it to continue on.

What one thing do you know now that you had wished you knew when you started your career in music?

I feel like I’ve learned what I needed to as I went along. Something maybe I would tell my past self would be not to worry so much and enjoy.

Cat Clyde is a singer/songwriter based out of rural Ontario, Canada. A combination of driven, soulful blues and sweet, folk-tinged, dulcet tones that carry a particular sense of familiarity provide the structure on which she creates her unique sound. With influences ranging from Patsy Cline and Lead Belly to Karen Dalton and Bobbie Gentry, this patchwork of musical significance, when stitched to her modern approach, fits like a well-tailored, corduroy-road cloth.

Mud Blood Bone, her latest album, will be released on 13 March. Connect with Clyde online and on the road.
