Video Premiere: Ben de la Cour – Last Chance Farm

Wednesday, November 11, 2020 By Chip Frazier

Ben de la Cour is one of my favorite discoveries this year. His album “Shadow Land” oozes raw emotion and was my introduction to one of the most authentic singer-songwriters around. Twangville is pleased to premiere his video from this album, “Last Chance Farm”.

This song stands out in contrast to the other songs on the album. Most of his songs are gritty and create a world that full of gothic noir. Think of William Faulkner or Flannery O’Connor cutting a record. “Last Chance Farm” is softer with a sad tone. The reason is that is the most personal song on the record. Ben has addiction and mental health issues, and he, amazingly, wrote a 50 page grant proposal (which he won), just before checking himself into rehab. He wrote “Last Chance Farm” about his experiences there, and seemingly nothing is held back. For example, he sings “I swear I’d give my first born for just one lousy beer. Jeri said you wouldn’t talk like that if they took yours away. How the hell do you think I wound up in this place.” For him to be so open should be an inspiration to us all to live life authentically and not hide from our own demons.

The video is also sparce. Just a turntable, Ben and his guitar. Nothing more is needed. The words hold all the power on the “Last Chance Farm”.
