They say write what you know. Sam Morrow has spent most of the year cruising the highways playing shows in support of Concrete and Mud, his latest album. Among the stand-out tracks is “Paid By the Mile,” which could otherwise pass as a musician’s lament.
If I had a nickel for every song I tried to write
I’d cut a check to every underdog who stays in the fight
The one thing that I know I’m still hungry every night
You ain’t done til’ it’s over, it ain’t over till it’s right
But I’d take my time, I’d go in style
If only I got paid by the mile
For every night and every show
For every dream that comes and goes
Through every trouble I’d just smile
If only I got paid by the mile
