LA popmeister Bleu doesn’t release a lot of his own music these days — he’s too busy writing and producing for television, film, and other artists. But personal experience provided the impetus for his new album: a tribute to two close friends he lost, longtime studio partner Ducky Carlisle and college best friend Alex Scutro.
Some albums mourn a loss. Others celebrate a legacy. Bleu took the latter approach with Sargeant Pepper Grinder — a declaration he makes with the title alone. Infectious melodies and soaring choruses abound, and the lyrics often let a punchline and a eulogy sit in the same verse.
Look no further than “Start a Band,” a full-on tribute to Carlisle. Bleu explains:
“‘Start A Band’ is the mostly true story of my dearly departed best friend, legendary Boston-area musician and Grammy-winning engineer/mixer Ducky Carlisle’s desire to start a band that only sang songs about monkeys.”
Bleu recounts the tale at the start of the song, adding, “it wouldn’t have made any money but you know that isn’t the point.” Electric guitars wail and the rhythm section wallops behind him.
Twangville is honored to premiere “Start a Band” from the forthcoming Sargeant Pepper Grinder. The song, like the rest of the album, is a perfect slice of power pop. Just as Ducky would’ve wanted it.
