South Carolina Roundup

Thursday, July 10, 2025 By Todd Mathis

I often get a few local bands on my radar spinning around the Columbia area and beyond. Here are a few I think you should check out.

The Water Kickers – With beautiful melodies and interesting arrangements the Water Kickers feature husband and wife duo Kelley and Brody fronting the band. They are strong enough as a duo but have been performing as a full band of late and I was fortunate enough to catch them last month at my local and it did not disappoint. Their new single, “Will She Rise Again” sends shivers when accompanied with the front page of the New York Times.

Quinn Cicala – Speaking of the New York Times… Yea, he’s from Georgia but this is my list so I don’t care. Not only does he make my local roundup, but he’s appeared on my overall best of before and his new album is great.

Kimberly Walsh – Delicate vocals, dreamy guitars amid a bed of lush sounds accompany Walsh on two new singles released this year. My favorite so far is “Spring Clover.“

Admiral Radio – I’ve mentioned this couple before, and if you haven’t caught up to them by now, it’s almost too late. They are one of the hardest working band in the region and have put out some stellar projects over the last few years. Their most recent is Consider Me a Lighthouse.

Thelma & James – This duo features Columbia’s Jake Etheridge and his wife MacKenzie Porter. Beautiful harmonies and tasteful production sums up this duo.

Richard Hurteau – Richard’s latest, “Moonlight” from his stint in Nashville features bluesy guitar licks and his signature baritone.

RIYL: July peaches from Gaffney, local roadside honey, smooth rocks
