We at Twangville are excited to premiere the video for a new song by Emily Zuzik – The Case for Slowing Down
Emily Zuzik is from Los Angeles where she is active in the local independent music scene. However she is also a bit of a renaissance woman. In addition to being a talented songwriter and musician, she is a commercial actress and a video producer and editor. She is also a self-described “rocker mom”. Amongst all of this she has recently taken the time to record a new EP. She has previously released six solo albums, Been in various pop and rock bands as well as numerous collaborative projects with acts such as Tedeschi Trucks/David Bowie bassist Tim Lefebvre and electronic outfit Woves. Her music covers a wide swath of influences. However, listening to her catalog, the quality of the songwriting is apparent on everything she does.
Her new EP, Age + Alchemy, finds her digging into influences from late 1970s and early ’80s New York City rock. The six songs on Age + Alchemy are some of the most self-reflective songs she has done. Each of the songs has an infectious groove that just pulls the listener along. The project was produced by frequent collaborator and local lynchpin of the west coast music scene Ted Russell Kamp. You may know Kamp as the bass player for Shooter Jennings band.
Today we are premiering a video off this EP, The Case for Slowing Down. The song was co-written with Ted Russell Kamp in one writing session. Here is how Zuzik describes the song:
“I was living in Altadena for the summer and really appreciating the change from my more centrally located eastside neighborhood. I was loving the quiet and the nature. I was reading poetry and Wintering by Katherine May. I was taking stock of what I had and getting rid of what wasn’t needed … I had the title from a little before then saved for when the song found me. I also had a lot of the melody and chords already buzzing around. Then, Ted and I had a writing session and everything came together seamlessly. Maybe it was the culmination of where I was headed. Maybe that backyard garden where I was living coupled with the occasional neighing horse from next door set the stage. I don’t question it.” As she says in the song, “I’m not dealing, just feeling, trying to lose myself in the sound
I’m not breaking, just making the case for slowing down.”
The video was shot by both her daughter, Riley Holmes, and Zuzik. Emily edited the video. (Like I said, she is a renaissance woman.) I think it is pretty cool she got her kid in on the act and is passing her talents down. The mother – daughter collaboration worked. The video has a vintage feel to it that goes perfectly with the atmospherics of the song. With a bit of a psychadelic vibe to both the song and video, the two blend cohesively.
We hope you enjoyed the video and be sure to check out Age + Alchemy when it releases tomorrow.
