“Puff the Magic Dragon” is one of folk music’s greatest songs. Sure, songs like “This Land Is Your Land” and “Blowin’ in the Wind” epitomize folk’s socio-political spirit. Yet I ask you this: how many songs have been – and continue to be – sung by generations of children. I’m fairly certain just hearing the song’s title will evoke vivid memories and perhaps an immediate singing of the melody.
If he had written just that song, Peter Yarrow would warrant acclaim. Yet it is only a portion of his musical contributions. As one-third of the legendary Peter, Paul, and Mary helped bring folk to a mainstream pop audience; as a songwriter he penned classic songs like “Day Is Done”, “Light One Candle”, “Torn Between Two Lovers” (a #1 hit for Mary MacGregor in 1976), and, of course, “Puff”.
Yarrow passed away last week but without question his spirit will live on forever. Here are two videos to celebrate his legacy. First is a 2016 solo performance of “Puff The Magic Dragon” in which he shares the song’s origin (and, spoiler alert, explains that it is not about drugs). Second is vintage Peter, Paul, and Mary singing “Day Is Done”.
