For more than 30 years, Michelle Malone has been exploring the corners of Southern music. While her music has often been rooted in Southern rock, Malone weaves in country, blues, and even some soulful swagger into her music. She has consistently demonstrated a mastery of all, a trend that continues on the forthcoming Southern Comfort.
The new single “Barbed Wire Kisses” sets the stage for the album beautifully. Malone’s simmering tale of a one-sided love affair bristles with Southern attitude. It is fueled by electric guitars and an unwavering rhythm, not to mention some tasty slide guitar courtesy Will Kimbrough. Malone’s voice is both soothing and biting, perfectly capturing both the love and frustration that the song conveys.
Says Malone about the song:
It’s another song about falling for the wrong one where you get hung up and you just can’t seem to let go even though you know they’re bad for you! I was in an unhealthy relationship for many years. One day I woke up and realized that that was not love, and I was able to pack my bags and leave for good. If there is a bright side, I’ve gotten a lot of songs out of it!
Twangville is honored to premiere “Barbed Wire Kisses” from Michelle Malone’s Southern Comfort.
