Mayer’s Picks – the Best of 2024 (So Far), the Albums

Thursday, July 11, 2024 By Mayer Danzig

Now That’s What I Call Fantastic Cat by Fantastic Cat

The sum is greater than the part with this collective of four singer-songwriters. Each of the four brings their own personality and songwriting style to the group, but they compliment one another beautifully. The songs crackle with intelligence and humor, all the better when the group’s harmonies kick in.

Forgotten But Not Gone & Few and Far Between by Christopher Paul Stelling

Christopher Paul Stelling mines the depths of his divorce with a double album that is as sprawling as it is emotionally charged. Forgotten But Not Gone & Few and Far Between is a tremendous showcase for both his songwriting and the magic that he creates with an acoustic guitar.

Halfsies by Lizzie No

Lizzie No demonstrates the range of her talent with an impressive collection that reaches across folk, pop, and rock. The constant is No’s captivating lyrics, which convey both warmth and raw emotion.

Ghost by The FBR

The FBR make quite a musical statement with their debut album. While Ghost is rooted in southern rock, the group’s pop sensibility demonstrates that it is not limited by it. Even in its most brooding moments, the album bristles with intensity.

On the Ride Here by Sam Morrow

Morrow is all about Southern boogie on his latest album. Think Southern rock infused with a healthy dose of Little Feat funkiness.

By Now by Heather Little

Texas has a strong tradition of musical storytelling. Texan Heather Little proves herself a worthy keeper of the flame with this enchanting collection. By Now is defined by deep and powerful lyrics that are set against a restrained musical backdrop and brought to life by Little’s captivating voice.
