Twangville had the pleasure of hosting The FBR twice at our Dallas shows last month. We enjoyed it so much that we invited them to join us in NYC later this week. Will we see you this Thursday at The Bowery Electric? Details here.
In celebration of that show, we are honored to premiere a new live video of “Set The Anchors Free”, an intense ballad from their debut album Ghost. This performance, which features band co-founders Malarie McConaha and Tim Hunter, was captured recently as the group barnstormed their way through Los Angeles.
The group shared some of the song’s history with us:
About Writing the Song
This is the first song that Malarie and I wrote “together.” We first started hanging out years ago on the premise of writing music together, but my style of writing can’t really be scheduled. It comes when it comes. I had written Set the Anchors Free, with visions of an older couple who worked in a lighthouse, keeping sailors safe from the rocky crags for decades upon decades, while the couple themselves had grown emotionally lost from each other. I didn’t like the melody I had written, so in defeat, I gave the words to Malarie. For the next few days, I got the joy of walking through the house at different times, hearing her work out the song on the piano. Hearing her voice create the melodies. I am amazed that I get to that reality.
About Recording the Song
The day we live-tracked this in studio, we had a good idea of some things we wanted to achieve. We wanted softness. We wanted surges in energy. Swells. Like the ocean. We also wanted to create some of the distant sounds and images. With a combination of how we approached the song with certain sound effects created with guitar effects, we were able to achieve the feel we were looking for.
