Jonah Tolchin is an Americana artist in the truest sense of the word – one who relentlessly explores every musical crevice of the genre. From folk to rock and from country to blues, Tolchin has explored it all over the course of his career.
Dockside, his latest album, goes deep into the blues. Tolchin travelled to Louisiana and recruited North Mississippi All-Stars co-founder Luther Dickinson to co-produce.
But Tolchin doesn’t just retread the blues. Rather, he puts his own stamp on it with songs that ripple with spirituality. The songs reflect some of his journey but with a perspective that is broadly relatable.
Among those songs is “Save Me (From Myself)”, which finds him shining a light on his own darkness, both lamenting and owning the situation and asking for heavenly guidance to change it. “Forgive me Lord, for I have sinned, I’m asking for a second chance,” he sings, “Please send some medicine so I can find the light again.”
Says Tolchin about the song and video:
“Save Me (From Myself)” started with a riff and developed into what has become my favorite song on the album. It has a sentiment that I feel is relatable: discovering that at times we can be our own worst enemy.
The video was directed by a friend of mine, Errol Colandro, and his partner in crime Carrie Keagan (VH1, MTV, Reno 911), generously agreed to be our star. It was shot near Joshua Tree in the California desert.
The video was going great until the car died on location! Some of the car shots were taken by towing the hotrod with a truck. Nice improvising on Errol’s part! The original concept was to be based on Stephen King’s “Christine”. The last shot of Carrie running headfirst into the possessed hotrod was inspired by an episode of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” where Yoda faces his dark side. I’m very happy with how it turned out!
Twangville is honored to premiere the video for Jonah Tolchin’s “Save Me From Myself”.
