When Josh Ritter came out on stage in gold painted shoes and a gold-flecked suit (and newly gray-curly hair), I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. But from the first note, Josh Ritter and the band brought the energy. In contrast to Josh’s rather subdued and contemplative new album, Spectral Lines, the live show was every bit as energetic as we’ve come to expect from Josh and the boys.
Josh did not shy away from the high-energy classics to start the show. “Country Song,” “Wolves,” “Me & Jiggs,” “Folk Bloodbath,” and “Mind’s Eye” brought a high-energy feel. New guitarist and pedal-steel player Rich Hinman lent a new feel to the songs. His lines and riffs were tasteful and immediately added a new dimension to the songs.
Then he moved on to three songs from the new album. “Strong Swimmer,” “Black Crown,” and “For Your Soul” took on new life with the Royal City Band’s live treatment. The songs sounded like sing-along anthems where Josh and bassist Zach Hickman’s soaring harmonies were infectious.
Josh managed to balance out the new hits with the range of his old tunes. “Homecoming” is a tried and true staple that keep the audience bopping their heads behind the Royal City Band’s tight rhythm section. On the other hand, Josh came out himself with his guitar to play “Snow Is Gone.” The song didn’t need anything else.
Josh was clearly able to honor his history and bring his old fans into his new material. What a show.
