Fountains of Clarity Interview Series: Brent Best of Slobberbone

Friday, September 22, 2023 By Erica Bruce

(Fountains of Clarity Interview Series will be an ongoing series of low-fi podcast-like chats.)

“We were booze band not a boobs band.”-Brent Best on Slobberbone

In the words of a friend recently, “You either know Slobberbone or you don’t, but if you do know them, you love them.” The band hasn’t played much in the last bunch of years, playing one-off’s here and there, and rarely outside Texas. (They did play Jason Isbell’s 2021 ShoalsFest in Florence, Alabama, because, as Slobberbone lead singer Brent Best said, “With that lineup, they just couldn’t say no.”)

2023 has seen the band out of the house a few times now, in honor of their 30 anniversary as a band. In February, they played Old 97s’ own 30th anniversary weekend in Dallas, TX, and this weekend, they are having a 30-year celebration of their own. Coined “30 fer 30,” Slobberbone will play 30 songs from their 30 years each night, at Dan’s Silverleaf in their hometown of Denton, TX. Both nights are sold out.

I got to sit down via Zoom with Slobberbone’s lead singer Brent Best and talk about everything from the anniversary year, to how he crafts a murder ballad, to the freedom of being “all about the lazy,” and lots in between.
