The cover song is a musical tradition. And sure, it’s fun to hear one artist cover a favorite song from another artist. The challenge, however, is that they generally tend to mirror the original. It’s immensely more interesting when an artist reimagines a song. The results can be transformational, bringing new emotion and impact to the surface.
Such is the case with Greg Hall’s dark take on Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart”. Says Hall about his approach:
On Bruce Springsteen’s original version of this song, he recorded it upbeat and happy. I’ve always wanted to hear the music in the song match the lyrical content. Afterall, it’s a song about not being able to hold onto love despite the narrator trying. Producer Vassilios Karsaliakos and I went for slow, moody, brooding as we created the music as well as the delivery of the vocals. Alongside Reed Sutherland (keys, bass), we focused on mixing modern electronic, with traditional acoustic instruments and used a sample of the lead vocal to create the synthesizer you hear throughout.
Twangville is honored to premiere the video for Greg Hall’s “Hungry Heart”. The song will be officially released tomorrow but hear it here first.
