Aside from the standards, I tend to shy away from holiday songs. It seems like they’re either syrupy sweet, or have lyrics meant to be sung by your drunk uncle. Every now and then one comes along that captures some of the holiday spirit while being able to hold its own as a good song in June. Chattanooga musician Teni Rane has done that with a single she just dropped called Rosemary & Evergreen. It’s one of 4 released this fall on her way to a fuller EP next year.
She and life partner Jonathan Shumaker have a holiday tradition called Tree Day. It’s the Sunday after Thanksgiving and is when they put up and decorate their Christmas tree. They captured the soul of that event on camera and turned it into a video that pairs beautifully with Rosemary & Evergreen. It has all the right details, from someone’s well-curated Christmas record collection, to the kitties you just know are poised for destruction. Teni’s vocals wrap around you like a favorite cardigan and all seems right in the world, reality be damned. We’re so pleased to premiere it here on Twangville. Merry Christmas!
