Los Angeles-based Calling Cadence have been a pleasant earworm for my this year. The songs on their debut album are acoustic-based but with an inherent funkiness that comes from smooth organ and electric piano and plenty of bass grooves. And then there are the vocals of band leaders Oscar Bugarin and Rae Cole, each strong in their own right and even more powerful when they bring their voices together in harmony.
The album version of “Good Day” leans into the funk with tasty organ, horns, and a grooving bass. The live acoustic version that Twangville is premiering today, however, has a great Laurel Canyon vibe anchored by the group’s harmonies.
Says Bugarin about the song:
“Good Day” came about while practicing my guitar, playing with ideas in my head, and then the main riff was born. Brought it to Coby, my then writing partner, and we carved out the melody and story line, mostly inspired by a combination of our own lives and experiences in life and love.
