They call it blood harmony. It is that special coherent blend that siblings can attain when they harmonize. In the case of The Cactus Blossoms, comparisons are abundant to the Everly Brothers. However, sometimes the obvious is the most apropos. The blend of their vocals seems effortless and gives each song a comfortable, smooth vibe that you glide on from the beginning to the end of the album. The Cactus Blossoms are Minnesota duo Jack Torrey and Page Burkum. Despite different last names, Torrey and Burkum are blood brothers. Burkum is a stage name. The album, “One Day”, was released only a few weeks ago but has risen to number six on the Americana Radio Chart. Strong performance notwithstanding the album doesn’t really push any new ground from their previous two releases. What it does do, is take the sound they are known for and perfect it. Why change things up when you can take something good and take it to a new level.
The album opener “Hey Baby” is an invitation to take a ride in a truck with the windows down. In fact, listening to the understated rockabilly rhythm of the song you almost feel the breeze blowing through your hair. From there the album journeys to Country, Soul and 60’s Pop. Another stand out track is “Everybody”, on which Jenny Lewis contributes guest vocals. “Is it Over” would have fits perfectly if it had been recorded in Laurel Canyon in the late 60’s. It isn’t just the vocal harmony that stand out on the album. The careful songcraft that makes up the melody of each song is spellbinding. This is the kind of album that begs to be listened to from beginning to end, and then listened to again. Check out the videos below.
