Singer-songwriter VanWyck started taking notice of all the people adrift, washing up on the steps and benches of her native Amsterdam. Realizing the gap between their demons and the ones we all fight is narrow, she started writing a story, a landscape, an alternate reality where everyone has a safe space, a place to recover and make the most of the world. This soon became her 4th album, The Epic Tale Of the Stranded Man.
The music on the record is sparse and dramatic. Like the thick fog we get in California, it simultaneously dampens extraneous sounds and emphasizes what cuts through the mist. The songs all have plenty of white space, and VanWyck and her band use that to create moods shifting between each piece to emphasize another chapter in the story. If you’ve binge-watched your fill of dramas on Netflix, turn off the tube and put on The Epic Tale Of the Stranded Man and take in a cinematic aural experience.
The second single of the album is Maybe, Maybe Not. VanWyck sings of finally casting aside her fears and being able to outrun the clouds or climb the mountain. As always, though, there’s self doubt. The video for that story features some wonderful cinematography and we’re so pleased to be able to premiere it here.
