I’ll admit that I’d lost touch with Alex Wong’s music for awhile. Although I recall his early days as part of the Animators, I hadn’t kept up with his solo output. I re-connected with his music with 2019’s Kivalina, a joint EP with Jesse Terry and, thanks to a chance meeting in Nashville this past September, I had the chance to see Alex perform in NYC this past week.
Wong performed several songs from last year’s solo outing The Elephant and the Seahorse. The songs were incredibly moving and were made all the richer by Wong’s stories about their inspiration.
Here’s Wong, accompanied by Melodie Chase and Kaitlyn Raitz on cello, performing “Show Yourself” from that release. As a bonus, I’m also including the lyric video for “In the Creases”, a heart-wrenching song about coping with heartbreak.
