Monday Morning Video – Mavis Staples & Friends

Monday, August 23, 2021 By Mayer Danzig

Let’s continue with the “and friends” theme that we started last week. Next up is a three-fer from the great Mavis Staples. First, a 1988 performance of the Staples Singers classic “I’ll Take You There” that features Dr. John and Jeff Healey. Second, a 2011 backstage rehearsal of the Band’s “The Weight” with Wilco and Nick Lowe.

Last, but absolutely not least, is Staples joining Lake Street Dive for their gem of a song “Bad Self Portraits” at the 2014 Newport Folk Festival. Gotta say, this is my favorite of the three – the joy and playfulness that Mavis brings to the performance is infectious. To see what I mean, watch her let loose and hear the crowd go wild at the 2:18 mark.
