Monday Morning Video – Goodnight, Texas “Dearest Sarah”

Monday, May 31, 2021 By Mayer Danzig

Back in 2014, Goodnight, Texas released the album Uncle John Farquhar, a series of stories set in the Civil War era. Among them was a song based on a letter that soldier Sullivan Ballou wrote to his wife Sarah shortly before his death at the Battle of Bull Run in 1861.

Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break;  and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.

View the letter and the song lyrics here.
