Saints Eleven is garnering a lot of attention in the Texas country music scene, especially since they won the Texas Country Music Association’s Band of the Year award last year. Their last record, Coming Back Around, really showcased the band’s red dirt, almost rock and roll, but country in the end, sound. They have a new EP coming out around the corner, This Town. You can drop the “almost” from in front of the rock and roll on this one.
The EP starts out with a good country number, My Home Is, with its Waylon drum beat. Love In Hell has a little twang from front man Jeff Grossman’s dobro. From that point on, though, relentless trumps laconic. Let Us Be launches with a Led Zeppelin wall of sound. The title track is a defiant statement about where one grew up. My favorite tune is The Crown. It’s an allegorical statement about a cancer diagnosis wrapped in a warning and vision of an upcoming hurricane.
Lucky for us, Saints Eleven decided to premiere The Crown before the EP releases in a few days. Although it wasn’t written about it, in these Covid-19 times the end of days sound is pretty appropriate, as is the sentiment that you just have to weather through these things.
