When I last was tuned into Austin’s Madisons, Dominic Solis and his band of merry-makers had just released a record full of tragic stories and ne’er-do-wells set to some lively dance music. Â It was a lot of fun if you didn’t listen to the lyrics too closely. Â Over the holidays their new EP, Country Music Sunday!!!, popped up on my radar, and while the stories are told now more in the first person, they’re still chronicling a fun band of misfits.
The opener, The Willie Song, is a full-on honky-tonk, cowpunk blaster where Willie is as much a euphemism as a real person. Â Staggering down the road, with bloodshot eyes, the cop tells the protagonist, “looks like you been talking to Willie tonight, son.” Â Sometimes I Get Drunk All Day is in a similar breakneck vein, while Making It On My Own slows a little with its tale of living in the moment. Â The other 2 songs are slower, the standout being Vidalia, about a dancer who “peels and peels”.
While you’re getting your arms around the new year, Country Music Sunday!!! is a good way to inject some spirit into any post-holiday doldrums.
