Several years ago Twangville had a cousin blog that ran an artist interview series called “Why It Mattersâ€. The interview questions were somewhat light-hearted but served a real purpose: to shine a light on the investments and sacrifices that artists make to build sustainable careers and why fan support matters.
More than 80 artists participated in the original incarnation of the series – everyone from a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer to artists just getting their starts, with plenty in the midst of their musical careers. The artists represented a diverse array of musical genres, something you’ll continue to see as we re-launch the series as part of Twangville.
Artists spoke with candor about the day jobs that sustained them in the early years (and sometimes still do), their early “character-building†gigs and the challenge of eating healthy while on tour.
We’ve learned about their creative van names – including “Rick Morvanis†(Archie Powell & the Exports), “Vanderson Cooper†(Murder By Death), “Maya Vangelou†(Uncle Lucius) and “White Lightnin'” (Eilen Jewell) – as well as the occasional mishaps that have occurred on the road.
Perhaps most importantly, they shared the lessons that they’ve learned, often the hard way, on their journeys. Music, and all the creative arts, are notable for the ongoing struggle – and sometimes outright conflict – between their artistic and business sides.
Among our favorites were Frank Turner, Lydia Loveless, Matthew Ryan, James McMurtry, Robbie Fulks, The Waco Brothers, Jerry Dale McFadden of the Mavericks and Ray Wylie Hubbard. And then there was Lloyd Price, the aforementioned Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who counseled musicians to learn accounting because “in business you must know how to count.â€
We’re thrilled to revive the interviews under the Twangville banner. Whether you’re an artist looking for words of wisdom or a fan looking for a peek behind the artistic curtain, there’s plenty for you to enjoy.
Look for a handful of fresh interviews this week with more to follow on a regular basis moving forward. You’ll hear from artists like Brett Dennen, Whitey Morgan, Michelle Malone, Brother Dege, Town Mountain and many, many more. In the meantime, you can view the full interview archive HERE.
