With one notable exception, my live concert year is off to a phenomenal start. The most recent addition to the list was John Hiatt, joined by Sonny Landreth and the Goners. The foursome revisited Hiatt’s seminal album Slow Turning in its entirety, every musical nook and cranny resounding with an infectious energy. Landreth, in particular, unleashed the fury of his guitar with a relaxed ease, the entire band grinning as they performed.
The occasion for the show and tour is to celebrate the 30th anniversary vinyl edition of Slow Turning and Bring the Family. Not only do both albums represent some of Hiatt’s finest songwriting, but each album finds Hiatt backed by an incredible array of musicians.
Bring the Family features a supergroup of comprised Ry Cooder (guitar), Nick Lowe (bass) and Jim Keltner (drums). Slow Turning was recorded with Landreth on guitar, joined by in-demand session players Ken Blevins (drums) and David Ranson (bass).
Enjoy these vintage performances of Hiatt & the Goners performing “Tennessee Plates” from Slow Turning and “Your Dad Did” from Bring the Family. Even better, buy the vinyl and catch the Goners on the “Slow Turning” tour – the upcoming dates are below.
