Mayer’s Picks – Best Songs of 2017, Part 3

Wednesday, December 27, 2017 By Mayer Danzig

I posted my list of favorite from the first half of 2017 back in July (here). Rather than replicate that list for my full year review, consider this a continuation — the best songs from the second half of the year.

Stone Age, David Ramirez
(from the Thirty Tigers release We’re Not Going Anywhere)

“Well I’m tired of waiting on the world to change, funny how the future is looking more like the stone age.”

Worth the Fight, Austin Hanks
(from the self-released Alabastard)

There’s something about Hanks’ blend of hesitation and hope that captivates.

If He Were Standing Here, Chris J Norwood
(from the State Fair Records release Longshot)

A heart-wrenching tale of a man reflecting on his troubled family history as he simultaneously seeks a father’s approval that will never come.

Nail My Feed Down to the Southside of Town, Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires
(from the Don Giovanni Records release Youth Detention)

Sure, I included Bains’ “Whitewash” on my favorite songs from the first half of 2017. This one, however, has really grown on my as the year has progressed. It is quintessential Glory Fires – intelligent social and political commentary set against a sonic blast of electric guitars.

Work Hard, Love Harder, Susan Cattaneo
(from the Jersey Girl Music release The Hammer & the Heart)

The testament to Cattaneo’s songwriting prowess is that both arrangements of this song – one with the Bottle Rockets and one with Boxcar Lillies — sound tremendous. That said, I’m partial to the version with the Bottle Rockets because, well, it’s the Bottle Rockets.

Ex-Girlfriends Cost Less Money Than Ex-Wives, Greg Klyma
(from the self-released Never Knew Caroline)

I’m just gonna take Klyma’s word for it.

Mile High, Lydia Loveless
(from the Bloodshot Records release Boy Crazy and Single(s))

Originally released in 2014 but included in this year’s collection of singles and b-sides, “Mile High” is a glorious rock anthem, fueled by scruffy electric guitars and a brash confidence.

Glass Jar, Tristen
(from the Modern Outsider Records release Sneaker Waves)

Pure pop perfection, plain and simple.
