Leeroy Stagger has been consistently putting out some fine releases for nearly 15 years. He’s never been one to pull his punches and Love Versus, his latest album, is no exception. He pays tribute to the “prophets” of punk (“Joe Strummer and Joey Ramone”), contemplates racial disharmony and violence (“Living in the Future”) and questions whether it’s possible to find contentment through true love (“Love Versus”).
The standout is this gentle anthem that calls for civility and a desire to “bring back human to the human race.” He continues,
If the talking heads could speak a little truth,
give us something that we could sink our teeth into.
Drop a dollar on a song, maybe read a couple of books,
get off of your goddamn phone. When there’s so much beauty in the people today,
you’re never gonna see it if you’re in the way.
And if the singer had something decent to say,
we might just make it through.
