One of the hallmarks of a good storyteller is the ability to take a big idea or topic and present it from the perspective of the individual participants.  Instead of a political statement, you have a human interest piece and sometimes that’s the only way to start a civil conversation.  American’s participation in military operations–war–has been controversial to a big part of our population since the 50’s.  Becky Warren chose instead to focus on a couple we can all relate to in her debut album, War Surplus.  She’s releasing a deluxe version of that now and the accompanying video is for Fort Sam Boys.
 Shot around the 101st Airborne home in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Fort Sam Boys is a good old country music song about never wanting to get involved with one of the soldiers that are a ubiquitous part of the landscape around any base.  But as the video shows a wide-ranging set of storefronts and landscapes in Fort Campbell, you realize that hope and reality can’t be so easily separated.  It’s the tip of the iceberg when it comes to living the life of a soldier and their spouse, so enjoy this little slice of the less glamorous part of Americana.
