Good Old War is a trio that sounds like a modern poppy take on Simon & Garfunkel. What their acoustic guitar and harmony driven tunes have are hooks. Perhaps their lyrics sometimes like the poetic vision of Paul Simon, but they trade it for an intimacy in lyrics. The title track of the EP, “Part of Me” spices it up with some subtle pedal steel that adds a mysterious quality to the track. It’s a welcome addition that does not take away from their loyalty to acoustic guitar based music. “How Did You Find Me” is another slow and more lush tune. It slows things down and builds an atmosphere. It’s a welcome change of pace, though perhaps not as strong as “Part of Me.”
“Only a Number” sounds like it could be on their albums. Upbeat and catchy. Acoustic instruments and soft drums. Â “Oak Tree” rings out with the innocence and intimacy that makes Good Old War so appealing. It seems like an echo of voices has been enlisted for the band’s catchy hooks. They seem to be in a cavernous hall where their audience is just as much a part of the recording as the band itself. It’s a refreshing and beautiful take on the meaning of pop, Here’s hoping the band continues to stretch and explore instruments but doesn’t forget what made them famous simple acoustic songs with catchy melodies and honeyed harmonies.
