There’s been, well, a bit of buzz around Nathaniel Rateliff. His recent Boston appearance was initially booked into a small club with a 240-person capacity but was moved to a room that holds more than 1,000. Even then, the show sold out quickly.
The buzz is well-deserved as Rateliff and the band put on a rousing soul review. They played the near entirety of the latest album save, of course, one of my favorites (“Wasting Timeâ€). Rateliff’s ragged voice filled the room, with smoking horns, swaggering guitars and a rock-steady rhythm section created a brilliant musical cacophony. I suspect that there wasn’t a single person who left the show without a little extra kick in their step, set aside a big ol’ grin on their face.
There isn’t any footage from the Boston show so here’s a clip from a recent show in the band’s hometown of Denver, CO. They’ve been closing most of their shows with a great one-two punch – their own “S.O.B.†with a bit of the Band classic “The Shape I’m In.â€
