Monday Morning Video – Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats

Monday, November 23, 2015 By Mayer Danzig

There’s been, well, a bit of buzz around Nathaniel Rateliff. His recent Boston appearance was initially booked into a small club with a 240-person capacity but was moved to a room that holds more than 1,000. Even then, the show sold out quickly.

The buzz is well-deserved as Rateliff and the band put on a rousing soul review. They played the near entirety of the latest album save, of course, one of my favorites (“Wasting Time”). Rateliff’s ragged voice filled the room, with smoking horns, swaggering guitars and a rock-steady rhythm section created a brilliant musical cacophony. I suspect that there wasn’t a single person who left the show without a little extra kick in their step, set aside a big ol’ grin on their face.

There isn’t any footage from the Boston show so here’s a clip from a recent show in the band’s hometown of Denver, CO. They’ve been closing most of their shows with a great one-two punch – their own “S.O.B.” with a bit of the Band classic “The Shape I’m In.”
