So I’ve been listening to a lot of music lately, new and old. Here’s a rundown:
The Vagaband/Medicine for the Soul – If you’ve been craving some vintage Wilco with a touch of The Felice Brothers thrown in, have I got the band for you. “Black Sheep†will have your toes tapping and singing along to in no time, while “Medicine For the Soul†seems like something you heard years ago and loved. A quick peek at their website tells me they reside over the pond, but I predict this album to hit big with fans of Twangville and the like.
Miles Davis/’Round About Midnight – Recorded in 1959 I’d somehow missed this classic until now. If you’re looking for a nice Spring evening relaxation record, you can’t go wrong with Miles.
Girls, Guns and Glory/A Tribute to Hank Williams Live – I know there’s been tons of Hank tribute records, but this one is so loose and fun that you’ve got to believe Hank would have loved it.
Beck/Morning Phase – So, after he won the Grammy and all, I figured I should give this one another shot. I’ll admit it is beautifully recorded and the strings and acoustic guitars shine, but there just doesn’t seem to be that one song that really gets me going.
Butch Walker/Afraid of Ghosts – I’ll admit that this one didn’t strike me after the first few listens, but being such a fan of Walker’s, I couldn’t help but keep digging. I’m glad I did. The pop rock shimmer is gone, but what’s underneath is still gold.
Silver Screen Orchestra/Glassera – So, I know the Miles Davis above doesn’t really jive with twang, and this band doesn’t either, but it’s been on my playlist for the last couple of months and it’s great stuff. Â If you dig a bit of ambient now and again, be sure to check them out here.
