Remember a few weeks ago when Amy Black wrote about her experience recording at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals? Well, now you can hear the results for yourself. Even better, Black is sharing the ep — for free — via her web site.
Black recorded four songs in Muscle Shoals. The tracks span the area’s rich musical history, beginning with one of the first FAME Studios hits from the early 1960’s — Arthur Alexander’s “You Better Move On.” From there, Black wraps her voice around “You Left the Water Running,” recorded by BOTH Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett in the mid-1960’s, and continues through the 1970’s gem “Starting All Over Again” and the Black Keys’ 2011 hit “Tighten Up.”
Black brought an impressive group of musicians with her to Muscle Shoals. At the top of the list was Spooner Oldham who, as a member of “The Swampers,” has backed many of the artists who have recorded in Muscle Shoals through the years. Twangville fave Will Kimbrough, alongside Paul Griffith and Lex Price, rounded out the band. Amazingly, other than Oldham, it was the first time that any of the artists had recorded at FAME Studios. Pretty darn special if you ask me.
