David Wax Museum @ Outside the Box Music Festival
July 2013, Boston MA
I was standing in the middle of City Hall Plaza on a sweltering July evening at the Outside the Box music festival. Never having seen David Wax Museum play before, I was unsure of what to expect. Before we left, my husband Jeff had excitedly told me, “Did you know that David Wax studied Mexican folk music during a yearlong fellowship from Harvard?” Um no, I didn’t know that. And apparently Suz Slezak plays a donkey jaw bone. A real one. Like I said, I wasn’t sure of what to expect…
On that hot and humid evening I finally got what the hype was about. It wasn’t just about David Wax with those deep blue eyes, jumping around in those short shorts! It was about energy, the dynamic between Wax and Slezak, and that Mexican / Americana twang. As I stood clicking away, I couldn’t help but tap my feet and appreciate this unconventional band. They will be back in the Boston area in December and you better believe I will be there!
