Mayer’s Picks: Best EPs of 2012

Friday, December 21, 2012 By Mayer Danzig

Several of my favorite releases from this year were 5-6 song sets rather than 8-10+ song full-length releases. Here, in no particular order, are a few favorite EPs from 2012.

  • THE VANSADERS, The Vansaders

If you like your rock-and-roll raucous and whiskey-soaked, you’ll be hard-pressed to find music better than the Vansaders. I’ll take mine straight, no chaser please.

Additional Twangville coverage of the Vansaders: Mayer’s Playlist for August 2012.

  • JONES STREET STATION, The Understanding EP

Here’s what happens when you take enchanting melodies and package them in restrained acoustic arrangements with gorgeous harmonies. The results are simply exquisite.

Additional Twangville coverage of Jones Street Station: Mayer’s Playlist for February 2012, part 1 and Music With a Purpose: Jones Street Station’s Perennials Project.

  • ANTONIO LULIC, Rough

In the interest of full disclosure, this was a late 2011 EP release that I discovered in 2012. I will gladly make an exception to include it on this list. The raw intensity and emotion conveyed by Lulic with just his voice and an acoustic guitar is staggering.

Additional Twangville coverage of Antonio Lulic: SXSW 2012: The Sounds, Part 2, Mayer’s Playlist for Spring 2012, Part 3 and Mayer’s Picks: The Best of 2012 So Far (The Songs).
