Is there anyone out there who doesn’t know Elvis? From the early Sun Studio years to the Vegas spectacles, he blazed a distinctive trail. Dig beneath the out-sized legacy, however, and you’ll find the heart of a musician. Over the course of his career, Elvis wrapped his voice around everything from gospel to country to rock.
In June of 1970 Elvis entered RCA’s Studio B in Nashville with a crack group of musicians including guitarist James Burton. In short order they roared through a collection of country and rockabilly gems, from Ernest Tubb’s “Tomorrow Never Comes†to Bob Will’s “I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water†to Willie Nelson’s “Funny How Time Slips Away.†Throw in a raucous take on Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On†and the collection was complete.
