Q Division Studios has long been a mainstay of the Boston music scene, hosting everyone from burgeoning local bands to internationally renowned artists (see the list here). The studio has been known to put out a few releases of their own, as they are doing with the limited edition Q-Dee Rock and Soul Series.
Beginning this past July, the studio has released a single each month. The artists are all Boston-based, but their music is steeped in musical traditions ranging from Motown to garage rock to Muscle Shouls R’n’B.
Smokin’ is about the only word that I can think of to describe it. So far in the series, the 45s have included:
Barrence Whitfield and the Monkey Hips
I’m not even sure where to begin with this guy. For nearly 30 years, Whitfield has built an impressive reputation exploring every corner of rock and soul. And when he lets out his trademark wail, as he does here, watch out for shattering windows.
Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents
This eight-piece ensemble hearkens back to the classic 1960’s girl groups. Their live performances are guaranteed to turn any dance floor into a soulful and sweaty extravaganza.

The True Loves
Yes, as in Eli Paperboy Reed & the True Loves. Minus their charismatic band-mate these boys show off their musical chops. One can only guess that the boys were having so much fun that they recorded an extra track for good measure.
John Powhida International Airport
Former Rudds front-man Powhida is a rock and roll chameleon with a penchant for everything from Hall & Oates to Cheap Trick to Prince. Here he explores classic late 1970’s and early 1980’s R&B with just the right touch of pop and funk.
Muck and the Mires
No less than Little Steven, the Underground Garage man himself, considers them one of the best garage bands in America. Do you need to hear more?
Each 45″, limited to a pressing of 500 records, is available separately. Mp3 downloads are available for those who, like me, don’t have record players.
Looking for that special gift for the music lover in your life? This ain’t a bad option.
