Wow. Upon seeing the name, The White Buffalo, visions of indie-hipsters attempting achieve some sort of irony for irony’s sake, were dancing through my head.
Thankfully, an irony-seeking hipster The White Buffalo isn’t. It was too good to be true that The White Buffalo would be this artist’s given name. According to our friends at Hearya.com, his real name is Jake Smith, unfortunately.
Stark, acoustic tunes make up The White Buffalo’s second EP, Prepare for Black & Blue. His growling, forceful vocal has an angry, almost Eddie Vedder-like tone when it hits its lowest warbles. As with so many great folk records, this is storytelling music that creates a situation for the listener, without giving the whole story away.
If music, as an artform, is supposed to move any who listens, then “Oh, Darling” succeeds in spades. It’s clear from the onset that soemething has gone terribly and tragically wrong, and that The White Buffalo is to blame. Given the omnious vibes, the imagination comes up with copious examples of dirty deeds.
In the title track, Mr. Buffalo implores softly, but certainly, to “pack up your shit, we’re through / prepare for black and blue“. Need I say more?
Well, how’s this for saying more? The first three commenters (use a valid email address, please) on this post will recieve a free copy of The White Buffalo’s new EP Prepare for the Balck & Blue
