Readers Pick: Tribute To by Yim Yames

Yim Yames Tribute To

Twangville readers picked the new EP by Yim Yames titled Tribute To as their favorite release for week of August 4, 2009. Tribute To is a six song EP from My Morning Jacket’s singer Jim James recorded as a ‘tribute to’ George Harrison. The record came together shortly after Harrison passed away back in 2001. Fans of either artist will reminisce Harrison’s work through a melancholic (though fitting) reinterpretation of some of his best work including “Love You To” and “My Sweet Lord”. This is about as good a tribute as you’re going to see for George Harrison. Thankfully James cooks it up just right by keeping it as an EP. A full record would have been a clear sign of someone trying to profit off a former Beatle’s success. Certainly not the case here as the artist is offering up a portion of the proceeds from purchases of the limited edition EP to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. Also of note, this release sets the stage for forthcoming records by Monsters of Folk (Conor Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward) and a full solo release by Jim James again under the Yim Yames moniker. (★★★★ — Tom Osborne)
