John Moreland/Rob’s House Demos

Thursday, July 30, 2009 By Todd Mathis

John Moreland and the Black Gold Band’s website states the following:

We’re from Okalahoma.  We’re loud as hell.  We don’t give two shits.

That may sum up the band when in full force, and it may sum up their 2008 album Endless Okalahoma Sky, but it doesn’t really capture the feeling of Rob’s House Demos.  The demos are an acoustic affair recorded at a couple of parties at, you guessed it, Rob’s house.  (I’m not sure who Rob is, nor do I care at the moment.)  The music is pretty straight forward and is a slow heartbreak/regret affair.  The standout track from the collection is “Trust Fund” in which Moreland laments:

“I get a little impatient/I’m suspicious of my generation/And kids with trust funds and a taste for the slums with guitars and drums.”

Only later to change the second line to:

“And big city boys on Main Street gone Hayseed.”

I have to say I agree with Mr. Moreland and have been suspicious of such bands myself.  (I’ll be nice though and not mention any by name.)

There’s a free download of Rob’s House Demos on the band’s myspace site under the blog “Free 99.”  Check it out.  You won’t be dissapointed. And if you are, I’m guessing John won’t give two shits.
