Jason Isbell / Live At Twist & Shout 11.16.07 EP

Friday, April 11, 2008 By Todd Mathis

Coming this Christmas to a theatre near you…ok, not really…it will actually be here April 15th, that’s next Tuesday, and its not in theatres but available exclusively in CIMS locations, the Isbell online store and at live shows.  Oh yeah, and it’s not a movie anyway.  I’ve just always wanted to start a review with those Weird Al Yankovic lines from his song “Nature Trail to Hell” so now that I’ve done that, we can move along to the Live EP at hand.  The track listing is as follows:

1. Grown
2. Goddamn Lonely Love
3. Hurricanes and Hand Grenades
4. Danko/Manuel
5. Outfit
6. Into The Mystic

The recording is very well done with extra props going to “Outfit” and “Danko/Manuel” which receive a nice laid back treatment as opposed to the “plow-through-it method” often used by the Truckers when playing live.  Isbell’s voice is in good form and he seems to be getting more and more comfortable as a solo front man and band leader.  I’m not a huge Van Morrison fan, but “Into The Mystic” isn’t a bad cover choice and fits the tempo of Isbell’s sets very well.  Definitely a must have for all ye Jason fans…it should hold you over until his next proper release.  And if you haven’t seen him live for yourself, make it a point to do so if he comes near.  You won’t regret it.
