Its been 10 years since Last Train Home first started playing at IOTA in Arlington, Virginia. They’ve since moved on to good ole East Nashville but they still haven’t forgotten the little club that gave them their start. Available now is their DVD release from a show they did back in April of this year filmed at the very club I just mentioned. If you’re not familiar with the band, this is a great place to start. Watching the disc you’ll get a great sense of what the band truly is like live. And you’ve got to give them credit. I regretfully missed the show that fateful April night. The weather that night was dreadful and I wasn’t quite in the frame of mind to risk the elements. You’d never know it from the disc though. It may have been raining on the outside, but it was nothing but sunshine on the inside (or bright halogens depending on your imagination).
When Last Train Home comes to IOTA these days they play for a full weekend, Friday night, Saturday night and then an all ages show on Sunday afternoon. The weekend of the DVD release party a week or two ago, I attended the Sunday show for the first time with my parents and kids in tow. I didn’t know what to expect, but I gotta say all three generations of Osborne’s enjoyed watching and listening to LTH do what they’ve been doing for years. I still prefer their night time shows, but there’s something nice about a band that can appeal to all ages. I was sitting next to Karl Straub, the songwriter for “Tonight” (see above) at one point during the performance. The band started playing the song he penned off of their self-titled album. Karl’s son, without skipping a beat, launched into a hilarious little jig. Good times for all I tell ya. I captured the video above of the band performing “Tonight” at their Sunday afternoon DVD release party on October 28, 2007.
To sample some of the songs on the DVD I also put together a Last Train Home iMix including the cover songs by other artists. Its limited to the songs available in iTunes but it will give you a really good sense of what to expect on the disc. Albeit, the DVD’s where all the goodies are at including a great jam of Scott McKnight’s “Unctious” while lead singer Eric Brace was trying to fix his guitar.
Bonus: Buy a copy of Last Train Home Live at IOTA between now and December 25, and get a free copy of the LTH CD Holiday Limited
