Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles at IOTA (8/10/07)
I hit the IOTA Club & Cafe Friday night to catch the Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles performance. And what a performance it was. I had previously only seen them once before at a beer festival in the middle of the afternoon. Let me tell you, they’re great any time of day but a night time setting is best. I give the band credit, apparently it took them 12 hours to drive from Boston to DC but if they hadn’t mentioned it you’d have never known it. They rocked in expected fashion covering songs from both their new CD Diamonds in the Dark and previous album Silver City. I was able to capture a few of the songs shown here, namely “Daniel Lee”, “Pious Proud” and “The Day We Met”. “Pious Proud” was dedicated to some guy named Bob in the audience who was friends of the band. Also, the band’s bassist Binky who is from Charlottesville had his dad in attendance. “The Day We Met” was dedicated to Binky and credited to his father for whom without his help bringing Binky into the world they would have never of met. Borges and the band make for a great live act and while I really loved the performance of these songs especially “The Day We Met”, the best songs of the night unfortunately did not make it onto my camera. Thats really just testament to how good they are. If they’re in your town, its a don’t miss opportunity. For guitar enthusiasts, Mike Castellana is one amazing guitar and steel pedal player.
Also of note, I arrived late and only caught the last three songs of Eilen Jewell‘s opening act, but I could tell there’s some genuine talent there. I’ve made a note to myself to learn more about her and the band. I believe she’s put a dent in the Americana chart with her new album.
